I really like Lightroom…

I’ve tried different options, but Lightroom kicks “#¤%…

I also like WordPress, but recently I’ve been kinda irritated about the way I presented my portfolio in WordPress.

The way I originally did it was go to the “WEB” tab in Lightroom, and create a Gallery with one of Lightrooms gallery engines, upload to a new folder online f.ex. www.azr-photography.com/new_galleri, and shazam, Lightroom would start to create the new folder and upload a gallery, complete with thumbnails and everything.

The only problem with this type of workflows is the way its presented on the final site.

When I posted a new entry about a shoot I had been on, I would write a post regarding the event and copy/paste the link to the new sub site with the photographs.

Now I know this sounds like a small thing, but the fact that I had to re-route my readers to a new URL to view my pictures kinda irritated me.

A search through WordPress’ plugin directory lead me to the Nextgen Gallery, a pro looking gallery for WordPress. This allows me to insert galleries directly into posts or create WordPress pages with the gallery as the main content.

I’ve tried to upload pictures to WordPress/Nextgen via the build-in image uploader, but because I use one.com as my web hotel, that is not an option. For some reason one.com has a feature activated called “safemode= on”.

Why this is, and what it does I do not know, but it constantly prevents me from uploading pics with WordPress.
Actually thats kinda okay; see I really prefer to work with my pictures from within Lightroom without first having to export to a local folder -> uploading to WordPress through the image uploader which is kinda clunky.

So what to do…

I knew that Lightroom could upload files via FTP, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it, without Lightroom using the Galleri Engine to create those “Airtight” galleries.

So a little Google search lead me to an answer, which in turn lead me to this page.

In Adobes infinite wisdom, the have created the “Lightroom SDK 2“ ´which is a programmers software kit and manual with a “how-to” to create custom plugins for Lightroom.

Adobe also provides sample Lightroom plugins to give you an idea of how this programming feature works.

It just so happens that one of the sample plugins is a FTP upload plugin…

From here on out it was a breeze…

I installed the plugin in my Lightroom folder, added the plugin via the Plugin manager in Lightroom and I was up and running.

Now my workflow looks like this:

  1. import my photographs to Lightroom.
  2. edit and screw around with my pictures in lightroom.
  3. export my pictures to my server via the FTP plugin; maybe creating the folder from inside Lightroom or from the WordPress admin page.
  4. go to the gallery section on my Admins page in WordPress and click “update folder” to find the new photographs I just uploaded.

What this has given me is a new way to display my work the best way possible.

Take a look at the result below.
