Practical Photography – a review
For a year og so, I’ve been an avid fan of the English photography magazine “Practical Photography“.
I first saw the mag, at a news stand at the train station near the school where I teach. looking for something to read on the 45 minute bus ride home, my eyes fell on the cover of the December 2008 issue, titled with, among others “macro, a seven point plan to success”.
Always looking for ways to learn more about photography and improving my skills I bought the magazine for the unholy price of 87,50 DKK, which in December 2008 was equivalent to 15$!!!!
Loving the way it was written about what interested me with regards to photography; not just reviews of camera gear, but also articles about technical stuff, and “how to get the shot” made me look for the magazine every month.
A lot of good things can be said about the Danish news stand business but reliability isn’t one of them… Every so often I would drive to the news stand to look for the magazine only to realise that it had not come in that month or that they had only gotten a few copies and that I was to late, the few copies they had managed to get, had been sold before I could lay my hands on them.
I subscribe to several different “foreign digest” including several different comic books (I’ll tell you about that another time) so choosing to subscribe to this was not a stretch for me…
The price, at first, on the other hand, was.
On the front page of the mag the market retail price is listed as £3.90 which is about 32 DKK or 6,50$.
Now look at their website for international subscribers and the price sky rockets to a whopping 71,00£ for 13 issues… thats 5,46£ per issue… which is an increase of 40% to the original retail price.
As I did the math, filling with dread, a little voice inside me kept saying, you don’t need this save your money, buy your wife and kids something nice…
Thankfully those thoughts faded away when I realized that this would save me 8,59$ per issue, (should I continue buying it at the news stand, and probably more since I frequently wasted gas driving to the place when it was out of stock) or in the curse of my subscription, 111$/66£…
you can buy a lot of stuff for 111$…
Here’s what I would buy:
- Macro Extension Tube Set for Canon EOS series = 14,95$
- Cactus Wireless Flash Receiver V4 = 23,95$
- 60cm Parabolic Covertible-Umbrella Reflector / Diffuser (Black & White) = 16,95$
- 5-Meter Shutter Release Cable for Canon EOS 1000D 500D = 12,95$
- L-shape Flash Bracket for DSLR SLR Cameras = 16,95$
Add 25 bucks for shipping and you’re left with a quarter for a pack of gum at your local news stand… (provided they sell gum, AND have it in stock obviously).

“…..you don’t need this save your money, buy your wife and kids something nice…” or better still buy your mother something nice.☺☺
