Continuing the need to play around with ambient light and a shallow depth of field, inspired by Nicolai Brix blog post about natural light, I took one of my 14 day old son with his grandmother, using only the light from a big window.

After several tries we managed to find an angle where you could see both my mother and my son’s face.

Aiming for a bright image, I bumped up the ISO to 200 to give myself some room to work the shutterspeed. Even though the Canon 1000D doesn’t handle high ISO’s very well, ISO 200 isn’t too much, even for this camera.

Wanting as shallow a depth of field as possible, I opted for the Canon 50 mm f/1.8 lens which for its low price is one of the best fixed prime lenses out there.

After getting the photograph into Lightroom, I fiddled around with the skin tones and finally cropped the image to get up close and personal.
